cante jondo

Spanish work

Definition

Deep song — the most intense, ancient, and emotionally raw form of flamenco singing, associated with grief, death, and spiritual longing. Characterised by melismatic ornamentation, micro-tonal inflections, and a modal scale with an augmented second. Albéniz evoked cante jondo in his most deeply expressive slow pieces — particularly Córdoba, El Albaicín, and El polo.

Interpretive Guidance

In pieces that evoke cante jondo, think of the melody as a singer who has all the time they need. Do not rush the ornamental turns and grace notes — they are the emotional content, not decoration. A non-vibrato, floating quality in the upper register, supported by very gentle pedal, approaches the character of the voice.
