zortzico

Basque work

Definition

A traditional Basque dance in 5/8 metre — one of the few 5-beat folk metres in European music. Albéniz used it in España Op. 165 (No. 6) and in Suite Española No. 1 to represent the Basque country. The 5/8 pulse divides asymmetrically (2+3 or 3+2), giving the dance its characteristic limping, rolling feel.

Interpretive Guidance

The zortzico's 5/8 should feel like a natural, slightly uneven gait — not like counting five beats. Internalise the pattern as a physical rhythm before touching the piano. The accent typically falls on beats 1 and 3.
