Phrygian mode

Greek work

Definition

A diatonic scale with a lowered second degree compared to the natural minor scale — in E: E F G A B C D E. The Phrygian mode has a dark, ancient, Spanish-inflected character (it is the basis of the Andalusian cadence). In Phrygian Gates, Phrygian sections are characterised by downward harmonic motion and a darker, more grounded quality contrasting with the brighter Lydian sections.
