double

French era

Definition

A variation or decorated repeat of a preceding piece, preserving the harmonic outline while elaborating the melody with faster note values. Rameaus Les Niais de Sologne (RCT 3) includes two doubles; the Gavotte et six doubles (RCT 5) presents six successive variations.

Interpretive Guidance

Each double should increase in technical intensity relative to the theme while preserving the harmonic and structural identity. Maintain the character of the original throughout - the doubles of a tender piece remain tender despite more elaborate figuration.
