jeu brise
French work
Definition
A more elaborate form of brise texture in which both hands produce flowing broken lines that interweave, creating an illusion of multiple voices from a continuous melodic thread. Closely associated with lute transcriptions for harpsichord; L'Entretien des Muses (RCT 3) is the supreme example in Rameaus output.
Interpretive Guidance
Use slight arm weight - never finger percussion - to sustain the sense of a singing line even through the breaks. The listener should hear a continuous melody, not a sequence of separated notes. On modern piano, use minimal pedal to preserve the transparent texture.
