passacaglia

Italian era

Definition

A Baroque form built on a repeating bass line (ground bass), over which the upper voices vary freely. Related to the chaconne, though the distinction was not always strictly observed historically. Gubaidulinas Chaconne functions simultaneously as a passacaglia: the ground bass is stated in bare octaves at the close, revealing the structural foundation that had been present throughout.

Interpretive Guidance

In passacaglia-based works, identifying the ground before learning the variations helps you hear each variation as a fresh perspective on the same harmonic reality rather than as unrelated events. The return of the bare ground at the close should feel like revelation, not mere repetition.
