tone row
English era
Definition
The foundational pitch sequence in twelve-tone (serial) composition, presenting all twelve chromatic pitches in a fixed order. Gubaidulinas Chaconne uses a 23-note row (repeating some pitches) built from chains of minor and major thirds, giving it an audible intervallic identity. The row is used in its original form (prime), inverted, retrograde, and retrograde inversion.
Interpretive Guidance
You do not need to hear the row analytically while performing, but understanding which intervals drive the melodic surface helps you shape phrases with internal logic. Thirds and whole-tone segments recur throughout — lean into these as recurring expressive gestures rather than treating each passage as isolated.
