sesquialtera

Latin era

Definition

The rhythmic cross-pattern between 3/4 (three beats of two subdivisions) and 6/8 (two beats of three subdivisions). Both metres share the same number of subdivisions but group them differently, creating inherent metrical ambiguity. Fundamental to the malambo and many Argentine folk dances; exploited throughout Ginastera's piano works.

Interpretive Guidance

Let the 3+3 / 2+2+2 tension breathe naturally rather than forcing one reading. The listener's ear oscillating between the two interpretations is part of the expressive effect. Mark where the phrase emphasises each grouping and plan the balance of weight accordingly.
