ostinato

Italian universal

Definition

A persistently repeated rhythmic, melodic, or harmonic pattern used as a structural and expressive device. Central to Ginastera's style, most prominently in finale movements (Piano Sonata No. 1 IV, Piano Sonata No. 2 III, Malambo) where the ostinato drives music to an extreme of power and physical endurance.

Interpretive Guidance

In Ginastera's ostinato passages, strict regularity is not sufficient — the relentlessness must build. Each repetition adds accumulated weight. Plan dynamic architecture across the entire passage and reserve the fullest force for the peak, not the beginning.
