sin compás
Spanish composer
Definition
Without bar lines: a notational practice Mompou adopted in many works, following Satie, to remove the hierarchical accent of the barline and allow the music to flow with complete rhythmic freedom.
Interpretive Guidance
When bar lines are absent, feel each phrase as a single gestural arc rather than a series of metered beats. Avoid accenting any note simply because it would fall on a strong beat. Follow the natural curve of the melody.
