On an Overgrown Path
Definition
Po zarostlém chodníčku — the cycle of 15 piano pieces (10 in Book I, 5 in Book II) composed 1900–1911, Janáček's most beloved piano collection. The Czech title suggests a pathway through life half-hidden by overgrowth — memory, loss, and the childhood landscapes of Moravia. Book I was originally composed for harmonium and was reworked for piano between 1901 and 1908; each piece carries a poetic title evoking a specific memory or scene. Book II, composed in 1911, is untitled and more elusive, published posthumously in 1942.
Interpretive Guidance
These pieces are emotional miniatures, not technical showcases. Their difficulty is expressive, not virtuosic: the challenge is to sustain a long emotional arc through very short gestures. Let the silences speak. Janáček's dynamics shift abruptly — from pp to ff in a single bar is common. Do not smooth these out; they are the argument, not ornamentation.
