Definition

A short ornament consisting of a rapid alternation between the written note and the note immediately below (lower mordent) or above (upper mordent/inverted mordent).

Interpretive Guidance

In Baroque keyboard music, mordents are often played on the beat. The lower mordent is common in Bach; the upper mordent (pralltriller or inverted mordent) appears frequently in Classical music.
