appoggiatura

Italian universal

Definition

A grace note played on the beat, taking its value from the main note and resolving by step.

Interpretive Guidance

In Baroque and Classical music, the appoggiatura is often an expressive suspension — it receives the accent and resolves downward. Unlike an acciaccatura, it is not played as quickly as possible.
