Danzas fantasticas, Op. 22

Three piano pieces composed in August 1919, each inspired by a passage from Jose Mas's novel 'La Copla': Exaltacion (the passion of the fandango), Ensuenos (a dreamy, impressionistic mood), and Orgia (a wild, whirling bacchanalian close). Turina subsequently orchestrated the work, but the piano original has a compact brilliance of its own. The three movements gave Turina his first major international success and remain his most frequently performed piano works.

No. 1 Exaltacion needs a rhythmically incisive approach — its energy comes from rhythmic precision, not from romantic rubato. No. 2 Ensuenos should shimmer and float, with careful pedalling to sustain the atmosphere without blurring the harmony. No. 3 Orgia builds relentlessly to a full-blooded climax; the ending must feel genuinely wild, not merely loud.
