Rudepoema

pt work

Definition

Composed 1921-1926 and dedicated to Arthur Rubinstein, the Rudepoema (a punning title combining 'rude' in the sense of primitive or raw, and 'poema', poem — but also a pun on Rubinstein's name) is Villa-Lobos's most demanding and extended solo piano work. At approximately 23 minutes it is a vast single-movement exploration of his full pianistic vocabulary, incorporating folk themes, Amerindian elements, extreme virtuosity, and an almost surrealist sequence of imagery. Rubinstein never performed it, reportedly finding it unplayable; Villa-Lobos himself gave the premiere.

Interpretive Guidance

The Rudepoema is essentially improvised music written down: it should feel spontaneous, exploratory, and at times deliberately rough. Do not try to impose a smooth formal narrative on a work that deliberately resists classical architecture. The extreme technical passages are not display for display's sake: they are the musical equivalent of a primitive, uncontrolled natural force — which is exactly what Villa-Lobos intended.
