Musical Terms (4)

  • ostinato Italian
A persistently repeated rhythmic or melodic figure. Mompou uses ostinato bass patterns throughout his piano music — bell-like repeated notes and rocking accompaniments that create a hypnotic, ritualistic quality.
Keep ostinato figures even and quiet. They should create a background pulse or colour without ever drawing attention from the melodic line above. Use minimal touch and avoid crescendo within the repeated figure.
  • primitivista Spanish
Mompou's term for his own aesthetic: a deliberate \"return to the beginning\" — stripping music of development, counterpoint, and conventional formal architecture to arrive at something fundamental and unmediated. Rooted in the influence of Erik Satie, it describes music that feels naive in the best sense.
Resist over-projection or dramatic shaping. The primitivista ideal rewards a direct, unadorned touch. Ornaments and dynamics should feel discovered, not imposed.
  • recomençament Catalan
Starting over: Mompou's concept of musical recommencement — the idea that each piece begins again from zero, without reference to what came before. Related to primitivista, it suggests a compositional attitude of perpetual freshness and childlike openness.
Each Mompou piece should feel as though it has no history — newly arrived, unhurried, without drama about what preceded or follows it. Begin each piece with a clean mind.
  • sin compás Spanish
Without bar lines: a notational practice Mompou adopted in many works, following Satie, to remove the hierarchical accent of the barline and allow the music to flow with complete rhythmic freedom.
When bar lines are absent, feel each phrase as a single gestural arc rather than a series of metered beats. Avoid accenting any note simply because it would fall on a strong beat. Follow the natural curve of the melody.
