Biography

Blind from birth, Vierne overcame extraordinary adversity to become organist of Notre-Dame de Paris, a post he held from 1900 until his death at the console during a recital in 1937. His six Organ Symphonies continue the French symphonic tradition of his teacher Widor, with a more chromatic and emotionally intense harmonic language. His 24 Pièces de Fantaisie are among the most popular shorter organ works of the early 20th century.
